More Adventures with Buttonwillow
I had another great adventure a couple of weeks ago! This time, I traveled to the Flaming Gorge in western Wyoming and Utah. It was awesome! Once again, I camped out. One of the side trips involved a visit to the Red Canyon Visitor Center. Come along with me as I explore this great little place! There are excellent foot paths to follow as you explore. There are also many informative signs. Some are for your safety, and others explain the geology, flora, and fauna of the canyon. Enjoy! Can you guess what caused the scar on this tree? Did you guess correctly? I did not see any Bighorn sheep in the canyon, but I did spot some along the road. Looking down, down, down at the Green River. This is a popular boating area. Some people call rocks that are covered in lichens moss rock. As we just learned from this sign, they are not really covered by moss! You can see the lichens on this rock. Look closely at this tree. See the holes in it? I wonder what caused them? It is obvious how the Red Canyon and the Flaming Gorge got named. Red rock is everywhere! Look very closely....can you see the boat? You can see why the sign in the next picture was there. These cliffs are rough and it is a long way down to the bottom! Mountain Pine Beetles killed many trees throughout the area. However, the lumber from the dead trees is especially pretty. The damaged wood has blue streaks throughout, and can be made into beautiful furniture. See the white object between my feet? That is a puffball. Puffballs are a type of fungi. Look down...you never know what you might see! Once again, I found cigarette butts and other litter, like this candy wrapper on my hike. Please be a good steward of our planet. If you carry it in, carry it out. Leave places cleaner than you found them. It is not only the end of this log's life, but the end of this visit to the Red Canyon Visitor Center nature hike. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!
