Q. How many feathers does a bird have? A. That is a hard question to answer. Birds are like people and hair....some people have a lot of hair, some people have less hair. The number of feathers depends on the species (kind of bird), the age of the bird, and the season. Birds molt, too. This means old feathers fall out and new feathers grow in. As a general rule though, A small song bird like a canary will have 1,500 to 3,000 feathers. A swan will have around 25,000 feathers. Many of those feathers are called down, which helps water birds stay warm as they swim about. An eagle might have 5,000 to 8,000 feathers, and a hummingbird's feathers might number in the hundreds. Q. What causes a meteor shower? A. That is a great question, and just in time for the peak of the Perseids (pronounced per-see-ud) meteor shower tonight! Meteors, also called falling or shooting stars, are not really stars at all. They are the result of space stuff hitting the Earth's atmosphere and burning up. Tonight's shower is caused by the Earth passing through a cloud of dust left by the tail of the Swift-Tuttle comet. The comet dust is hitting the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of 37 miles per second. If we do the math, we find that 37 miles x 60 seconds x 60 minutes = 133,000 miles per hour. Wow! The best time to see the meteors/falling stars, is around 4 a.m. Eastern time. This is 3 a.m. Central time, 2 a.m. Mountain time, and 1 a.m. Pacific time. If you can, get away from city lights. This makes it easier to see the stars and any meteors. If it is cloudy, or you can't stay up to watch, don't worry. This meteor shower has been happening for thousands of years. It peaks on August 12 every year, and meteors can be seen for a few days before and after that date. Thanks, Janna S., for a great question. Q. My school starts in exactly one week. That means I have to get up at 6:30 a.m. I'd rather sleep until 9 a.m. What can I do?
A. The first thing is to accept the fact that you can't change your school's start time. Set your alarm for 8 a.m. tomorrow and Wednesday. Set it for 7:30 the next two days. Wake up on Sunday and Monday at 7 a.m. By Tuesday, your body will be more ready to wake up at 6:30 a.m. This makes it a little easier, rather than waiting until the first day of school to try making the adjustment. Q. Do earthworms have brains? A. Earthworms have a very basic "brain." It is an enlarged group of nerve cells at the head end of the worm. A very long nerve cord runs the length of the worm. While they can respond to certain stimuli, like light and dark, and dry and moist conditions, they do not have the ability to think and reason the way more advanced animals can.
